International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest global educational initiative focused on composting and soil health. Celebrated annually during the first full week of May (May 4–10, 2025), ICAW brings attention to the critical role of composting in creating healthier, more resilient communities.
This year’s theme, “Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost!“, highlights how composting—whether at home, in schools, or through large-scale municipal programs—empowers communities to manage waste responsibly, support local food systems, and improve soil health.
Yardfully® is proud to once again sponsor ICAW, supporting the movement to make composting accessible and impactful for communities of all sizes.
Why Composting Matters for Sustainable Communities
Sustainability starts at the local level. From city neighborhoods to rural farms, composting transforms organic waste into a valuable resource that:
- Reduces Landfill Waste – Organic waste accounts for a large percentage of landfill material, where it decomposes and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting diverts this waste and turns it into a regenerative soil amendment instead.
- Strengthens Local Agriculture & Green Spaces – Whether for backyard gardens, urban farms, or municipal landscaping projects, compost enriches the soil, improving water retention and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.
- Builds Community Resilience – Healthy soil supports stronger local food systems, reduces stormwater runoff, and enhances climate resilience by storing carbon and preventing erosion.
- Creates Local Jobs – Composting initiatives generate employment opportunities in waste management, agriculture, and environmental services while supporting green businesses.
